After narrowing down my list of 8 to a list of three and sorting by most-likely-to-use, I submitted one for my front-end project capstone project and got a green light. I’m geeking out. But probably not for why you might think.
See, I have a tendency to imagine and stockpile ideas. That should be something to celebrate — having a persistent flow of creative juices. (I don’t like the way that sounds, and if you read it and think the same, that means I didn’t think of a better phrase to replace it before I clicked “Publish” on this post). Ideas are awesome, and I wholeheartedly love every one of them. But, ideas don’t execute themselves.
That previous paragraph is a long setup to say that I get to start and finish one of my ideas because I HAVE TO. It’s an Nashville Software School (NSS) assignment. I gotta ship it.
The school assignment is that pressure I need to see something I make reach the finish line. It’s a different pressure than when someone pays you for a job. That’s an exchange where you get back what the contract says vs you get back what you put into it.
Competition that’s not competition
There’s another level of pressure, of health stress where I want this thing I build to be insanely good. And useful. And functional. After seeing capstone demonstrations from two other cohorts, I know what students can do, and I’ve seen some really smartly build web applications.
It’s not competition, but it’s competition. Days ago I mentioned the benefits of envy. I feel a strong pull toward wanting to perform — to make something that amazes me. Like wow!
So yeah, I’m geeking out because I know I’m going to finish something. It’s a good feeling.
