Cons

There are more than a handful of disadvantages to loaning out the Clarity via Turo:

  • It’s a plug-in hybrid, and I anticipate battery charging will be too complex for my average Guest.
  • It’s harder to maintain a clean interior because it’s the car I ride the kids inside of for 7 hours every other weekend.
  • It’s a larger than average size car in length and width, and I would likely get a lot of body damage especially on the wheels.
  • I would severely overprice the daily rate — likely $80-$90 per day.

Pros

The advantages are basic:

  • I’d earn more money — if the Clarity would be reserved for 75% of each month, it could net almost.
  • I would be able to make the Clarity unavailable on days I need it like visitation weekends with the kids.
  • I would likely earn enough money to cover any Ubers I would need to take on rare occasions.
  • I will be able to sit a max length of days a guest can rent the Clarity.
  • I would not offer unlimited miles meaning I would care of the miles at a reasonable amount per day like 300 miles/day. I would charge additional miles on the higher end of cents per mile range — like 0.28-0.30 cents/mile for each mile driven over.
  • The Clarity is a luxury class car, and that would justify the high daily rate I’d ask.
  • My Turo reputation from reviews and ratings would help the Clarity get booked for Trips.

At the moment, I don’t have the mental bandwidth to put the Clarity out there to see what happens. I like the idea, but I need a little cash in-hand to get the Clarity cleaned up. I’d also need that car cleaned up so I can post photos.

There are just a few logistical things I need to get done before I start the experiment. For now, I’m just thinking out loud.
