Quality of Driving Equals the Quality of Vehicle One Can Purchase

I think the quality of vehicle you can buy should be determined by the quality of driver you are. I say that because the way some drivers operate a 4000 lbs machine makes them an entire liability. Can you imagine though? I can.

Let’s explore what that might look like. The immediate factors to consider are as follows:

  • length of time you’ve held a valid drivers license;
  • length of time since your last drivers road test;
  • inspect to check if your current vehicle has ever had the Cruise Control fuse replaced;
  • vehicle classes of your last two vehicles owned;
  • live demonstration of you connecting and operating your phone with your current vehicle’s Bluetooth system

That should be enough to get us started. Based on these factors we can determine that a person can/cannot buy a vehicle that’s newer than X years old, capable of Y amount of acceleration, and weighs a maximum of Z lbs/kg.

One more factor: turn signals aka blinkers

Another factor to consider is the number turn signal flashes measured against total miles of your current vehicle. In my imaginary universe where this happens, turn signal flashes/blinks are logged by a counter in the vehicle’s ECU. We, the people behind designing the system, would determine a coefficient for the acceptable amount of turn signal usages based on decades of driver behavior and whatnot, then we use the coefficient to determine a driver’s Turn Signals Operator Safety (TSOS) rating. (I could be misusing “coefficient” here as I’ve had only two years of college.)

We take the odometer number, divide it by the number of turn signal flashes, then multiply that number by the TSOS coefficient. The new figure has to be within X margin above or below a predetermined point on the TSOS scale. When a person is outside that range, they have to choose a different vehicle with a larger margin. Also, I just decided that different vehicles should have different size margins on the TSOS scale.

I think this system would really really help… me, specifically. My peace of mind is my primary motivation. However, I can see it helping other drivers too.
