Funny story about the book Gulliver’s Travels: it’s horrible to read. It was such a failure for a 5 and an 8 years old that I bailed on it a few sentences into the first chapter and told the kids we’d be moving onto the next book in the list: The Jungle Book.

To summarize how I felt when the book eventually started, I thought “What the hell English is this??”.

There’s no way the kids would get anything from the text because i couldn’t understand it. I’m sure it’s a good book and story being how well-known it is, but, wow, that book was genuinely hard to read.

I did not fail by choosing The Jungle Book. It’s plain language, British-narrated, with a decent pace. I’ll be honest, after listening to the first 15 minutes of the book last night, I’m really looking forward to this one.

The Jungle Book has been on personal reading list for some years.
